Can I sue if I slip over at the shops?

Falling over when you trip or slip on something can be embarrassing, but it can also leave you with serious injuries that take months, even years of recovery and leave you with huge medical bills.

If it happened in a public place like a supermarket, shopping centre, entertainment venue or even in a park, you might be entitled to sue for negligence.

Give us the details, and we’ll tell you what your options are – no fee, no obligation.

Step 1 of 2

Jean was on her way to meet friends for coffee at the local shopping centre.

The plants in the concourse had been watered that morning, and some water leaked out and had run across the floor. Jean didn’t see it until it was too late. She fell heavily, fracturing her hip and wrist. Until then, she was a fit and healthy woman who enjoyed gardening and bushwalking. Now she was facing years of pain and rehabilitation and would have to give up her hobbies. Jean successfully sued the shopping centre for pain and suffering and loss of enjoyment of life. She was also able to claim for the cost of modifications to her home.

Dave was excited to be taking his first cruising holiday with his family and friends.

On the second night at sea, he was struck with severe food poisoning, which was traced back to some seafood he had been served that night. He was confined to his cabin for the rest of the cruise spoiling the holiday for himself and his family. Dave had serious long-term health problems from his poisoning and successfully sued the cruise line for pain and suffering damages. Dave’s family also sued for distress and disappointment over the company’s failure to provide the pleasurable and relaxing experience they had promised.
